Setting out to take dance photos, I was inspired by Martha Graham saying that Barbra Morgan's work "reveals the inner landscape that is a dancer's world." The intent of this body of work is just that, to bring the viewer into the dancer's world. Traditionally dance photos are all about the dancer hitting the "perfect" pose, but with these images the goal was to focus on the dancers. Dance is such a special form of expression and each dancer has a unique relationship with it because at the end of the day, as a dancer, you have to dance for yourself. With this in mind, I wanted to create images that are different from the way most dance photos are made. I used different camera and lighting techniques to bring the focus to the dancer, therefore showing the dancer's emotion and telling a story about the dancer's connection to dance.
